It is one of the world's oldest civilizations, which is characterized by a highly developed culture and early use of writing. It was developed in the valley of the Nile over 5,000 years ago. During the Old Kingdom (3110–2258 B.C) Egyptian culture and commerce flourished, and the great pyramids were built.
In 332 B.C. Alexander the Great took possession of Egypt, called himself a Pharaoh, and founded the city of Alexandria. Afterwards, Egypt became a Roman Province.

Modern Egypt
After 500 years, Egypt was seized by the Mamluks in 1250 and the Ottoman Turks in 1517. But the first close contact with the West occurred in 1798, when French forces under Napoleon occupied the country & Egypt has been under foreign domination for a long time.

Independent Egypt
In1952 the Egyptian army organized a revolution where they managed to depose King Farouk in a coup d'état & Egypt was proclaimed a republic.
